Plastic surgeons have undeniable involvement in the trauma management due to their indispensable quality of service, but this role is largely unrecognised worldwide.

Plastic and reconstructive surgery focuses on restoring form and function following a traumatic injury. Dr Irsigler is on call alternative weekends at a number of hospitals in Gauteng. He specialises in trauma injuries to the face, such as dog bites, lacerations from falls and burns.

  • Are a relatively frequent occurrence and is a terrifying experience for the person involved, typically affecting children.
  • Early intervention allows for best surgical treatment and possible outcome.
  • A comprehensive management plan which includes scar modulation therapies, ensures optimal end results.
  • These arise from sporting activities or other causes especially involving the face.
  • Attention to detail is needed when treating tissue injuries of varies degrees particularly in the face.

These are classified into acute or chronic depending on a variety of parameters.

Acute wounds:

  • Mostly full under the trauma.

Chronic wounds:

  • Maybe due to a non-healing state, or chronic disease but irrelevant to the cause they always remain a severe discomfort for the patient
  • Together with a team approach we aim to control the parameters that influence how the wound heals to ensure closure of the defect.
